Sony/Columbia Pictures announced today that Marc Webb ("500 Days of Summer") has been hired to helm the next "Spider-Man" film, which is being described as a reboot to the "Spider-Man" film franchise.
Webb was hired after Sony's Amy Pascal and Sam Raimi could not come to an agreement regarding the creative direction of "Spider-Man 4." The original release date for "Spider-Man 4" was planned for May 2011 but Sony has since decided that the untitled "Spider-Man" reboot will be released the following summer in 2012.
James Vanderbilt, who penned the original drafts for "Spider-Man 4" and "Spider-Man 5," will start with a brand new script. It is known that the new "Spider-Man" film will take Peter Parker back to high school. Few other details are known at this point.
Another rumor is that Sony hopes to do the next "Spider-Man" picture in 3-D.
